Where can I Find Free Antivirus Software to Download? Review Free Anti-Virus Software Applications

There exist tons of Free Anti-virus software that you could stumble upon on internet to keep your PC secure. Few are genuine and rest come with virus bundled in them. Usually you install these antivirus or virus cleaners first to check their credibility to end up having viruses that actually weren't there on your system before installation. The software you trusted came packaged with Virus to make it look as if it actually found a Virus on the first scan on your system. You now realize that how comfortable it would be if there is someone who could do the dirty job to attest the credibility of the AV software before hand. This will save you the pain of checking the anti-virus software yourself, isn't it?

I have experimented with few of the free Anti-virus software at leisure and have found them to be best in the field.I have compiled them here, and in case you stumble upon any other than these, you are most welcome to recommend them to me for verification and addition to the list below. I have numbered them 1 to 5, not necessarily on their performance, but just for the sake of numbering. Remember, each one of them do their job perfectly in the niche, protecting and securing your PC. However, its left to your choice to opt one of them based on your requirements.

1. BitDefender Free Edition (Freeware)

BitDefender recently launched a new version for Linux and FreeBSD, which is free for personal use along with the existing Windows version. I am yet to try Linux version.

Main features include:

  • On-demand antivirus and antispyware protection

  • Script and extension-based integration with various applications and services:

  • Mail clients and Mail Server services

  • Scheduling services ensuring scan and update automation

  • Classic command line scanner complete with a graphical user interface for better integration with desktop environments

  • Automatic addition of the scanner’s GUI to the system menu

  • Action setting based on scan result type

  • In case you try the Linux version let me know your experience.

    2. Avast Antivirus (Freeware and Shareware)

The list continues with Avast. Avast! antivirus Home Edition is available free of charge to download and they have a professional version for business purposes. It has auto update feature to keep the free version upto date. It requires you to register within 60 days to keep the free copy running, suppose you didn’t register the first time while downloading, remember. The registration is quite easy and simple, and will take only a couple of minutes.

    Avast basic feature include,

  • 100% detection

  • Built-in Anti-rootkit, anti-spyware

  • Unbelievable performance.

  • Consumes less memory.

This one is in the free software clan too. It’s free and powerful. Avira has an unparalleled protection from internet threats. They do have premium suite with more features, however their free version works wonders in securing and protecting your PC to an incredible extend.

    5. ClamWin Free Antivirus (Freeware)

Another wonderful Free Antivirus, I should say. ClamWin runs on Microsoft Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/2003 and Vista. It comes with an easy installer and it’s Open Source. You can download and use it absolutely free.

    It features include:

  • High detection rates for viruses and spyware.

  • Scanning Scheduler

  • Automatic downloads of regularly updated Virus Database.

  • Standalone virus scanner and right-click menu integration to Microsoft Windows Explorer

  • Addin to Microsoft Outlook to remove virus-infected attachments automatically.

    6. AVG Anti-Virus (Freeware and Shareware)

AVG Free provides basic antivirus and antispyware protection for Windows and is available to download for free. You can also upgrade to a premium one for enhanced protection and it doesn’t cost much considering the valuable personal data you have on your system to protect.

  • It’s notable that it's one of the most downloaded software on CNET's Download.com.

  • It provides protection against viruses and spywares alike (antivirus and antispyware)

  • It is known to be fast, effective and very light on the system. It doesn’t eat away on the system resources.

  • Goes well with Windows XP and Windows Vista

  • Remember, the AVG updates the free version automatically to keep the virus definitions up to date. AVG is actually too good to be Free! Lucky we!
